6th Grade Math Curriculum - Standards, Lessons, Activities, Printable Worksheets

A 6th grade math curriculum should be taught using 6th grade lessons including interactive activities, learning games, printable worksheets, assessments, and reinforcement. 6th grade math curriculum should rely on many learning tools - 6th grade lessons with activities, worksheets, reinforcement exercises, and assessments. And a 6th grade math curriculum should cover all the math strands, not just arithmetic. The major math strands for 6th grade curriculum are number sense and operations, algebra, geometry and spatial sense, measurement, and data analysis and probability. While these math strands might surprise you, they are all critical lessons for a 6th grade math curriculum.

6th grade math lessons, worksheets, and activities teach 6th grade math curriculum covering all the math strands.

6th Grade Math - What are the Standards and Curriculum?

Time4Learning teaches a comprehensive 6th grade math curriculum using fun, 6th grade math activities to build a solid math foundation. Help your child excel in math, learn more about Time4Learning's 6th grade math lessons, curriculum, activities and worksheets.

6th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Geometry and Spatial Sense

During 6th grade, math students identify, draw, and use symbolic notation for two-dimensional geometrical figures such as points, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, planes, rays, and parts of a circle. They know and draw angles including obtuse, acute, right, and straight. 6th grade math lessons include analyzation of relationships between two-dimensional geometric figures, the use of appropriate measuring devices such as rulers and protractors, and problem solving with spatial visualization.

6th grade math curriculum teaches students to recognize congruent and similar figures. Students will be expected to identify and perform various transformations such as reflection, translation, and rotation of a given figure on a coordinate plane.

Using known geometric properties such as symmetry and congruence, 6th grade math students solve real-world and mathematical problems. They observe, explain, and make conjectures about geometric properties and relationships among angles, triangles, squares, rectangles, and parallelograms. On a coordinate plane 6th grade math students learn to identify x and y axes, identifying coordinates of a given point in the first quadrant. They plot specific points in the first quadrant of the Cartesian coordinate system.

6th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Algebraic Thinking

Using 6th grade math curriculum, students describe, predict, and create numerical and geometric patterns using manipulatives, tables, and graphs. They identify patterns and state the rules used for making them. 6th grade math students find patterns in real-world situations and are able to describe relationships and patterns using words, tables, symbols, variables, expressions or equations. Students are given initial terms for a pattern then are expected to supply missing terms to complete patterns.

The first quadrant of function tables and graphs will be created and interpreted to explain cause and effect relationships. Values for variables will be exchanged and students will describe the results. 6th grade math curriculum uses variables to represent numbers and relationships, translating verbal expressions into algebraic expressions. Conversely, 6th grade math students are asked to change simple algebraic expressions into verbal expressions or sentences.

6th grade math students are taught to solve linear equations using real-life situations. Pictures, models, and other strategies are employed. Students use concrete materials to solve equations and are able to explain their reasoning orally and in writing.

6th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Data Analysis and Probability

6th grade math students read and analyze data displayed in charts, pictographs, stem and leaf plots, and other forms. They generate and collect data for analysis, choosing appropriate titles, scales, labels, keys, and intervals for displaying data in graphs. During 6th grade math students construct, interpret, and explain graphs and tables including single and multiple bar graphs and single and multiple line graphs.

Also 6th grade math curriculum includes finding range, mean, median, and mode for a given data set. Students describe real-world data, explaining appropriate methods of finding measures of central tendency. Using technology including graphic calculators and computer spreadsheets, 6th grade math students create graphs. They determine all possible outcomes of an event using a tree diagram or organized list.

Lessons in 6th grade math include calculation of simple mathematical probabilities. Students experiment using manipulatives then compare results to mathematical expectations. They are expected to discuss the validity of their experiments.

6th Grade Math Curriculum and Standards - Lessons, Activities, Worksheets - Summary

6th grade math lessons and activities that cover just one or two of these five strands are narrow and lead to a weak understanding of math.

Time4Learning teaches a comprehensive math program. Children are placed in the sequence based on their current skills. Math becomes fun. Parents can participate and watch how new concepts are introduced progressively and mastered through practice. Let your child start learning today. Want to know more?
