There are many historical sites in Anderson County. Fort Houston was located here and you can see the old cemetery and visit several if the soldiers and residents of the fort graves. Also, the 1st Post Master of Texas, John H Reagan was from Palestine and remnants of his homestead is still there. Y ou u drive and see an old jail of the mid1830’s that is on land dedicated to migrant workers. Our community theatre uses an old movies theater of the early 1900s while the oldest continuous jewelry store in Texas is right around the corner. Palestine has the most oldest buildings in the state, and a running steam engine train. Well worth a trip for a homeschool family. We are about half way between Dallas and Houston; 5 hours NE of San Antonio.
These are great suggestions, Charmaine! Thanks so much for sharing them with us and our readers! 🙂
I’m shocked they haven’t included the Houston zoo and museum district as well as gone deeper into other things offered in the areas listed…and in San Antonio this is what they chose out of everything the have to offer especially between there and Austin. I thought this would be a great guide with a wealth of knowledge on these homeschooling journeys.
Hi Stephanie! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment! Many of the larger attractions, like the zoo and major museums, are widely known. Our intention with blog posts like this one is to help parents locate field trip attractions that they aren’t familiar with and to encourage them to seek out other locations that they might not have thought about before. Specifically locals, who often forget what’s right in their backyards. 😉 Any places that you feel are worth visiting though, you can definitely share in the comments here for our readers! 🙂
