Elementary Language Arts Concepts Covered

Time4Learning’s language arts curriculum correlates to state standards and uses individual learning paths for teaching elementary language arts. Because reading and writing is the foundation for every other school subject, it is incredibly important that students lay a comprehensive groundwork for these proficiencies in the early elementary years.

Using a combination of animated lessons, instructional videos, worksheets, quizzes, and tests, Time4Learning’s elementary language arts lesson plans cover the following strands of instruction in grades PreK through five.

Phonics and Fluency – The reading process can be broken down into a series of skills, with each skill building on the others until fluency is complete. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that words are made up of sounds which can be put together in different ways to make different words. This early reading skill is bolstered by further exploration of phonics, including blending and decoding sounds. Time4Learning uses a combination of visual and auditory lessons and activities so that students aren’t just reading, but interacting with text to gain reading fluency.

Grammar and Mechanics – While phonics and fluency focus on the decoding of words, grammar helps students understand the relationships that words and conventions have with one another. Time4Learning’s interactive, online environment is the perfect place for students to learn, practice, and review the rules that will govern how they write for the rest of their lives.

Reading Comprehension – As indicated by how many standardized tests assess it, reading comprehension is vital to a student’s overall educational success. Learning to read is the beginning of literacy, but reading to understand is what brings text to life and creates reading enjoyment and satisfaction. The reading comprehension strategies used in Time4Learning’s curriculum focus on helping students monitor their understanding of a passage as they read.

Vocabulary – Another, all-important strand of language arts is the growth of a student’s word bank. In grades 3 through 12, students will acquire approximately 3,000 new vocabulary words per year! The Time4Learning vocabulary approach emphasizes vocabulary both within context of literature and as a dedicated study.

Writing – As you might expect, teaching writing incorporates each of the previous strands of language arts knowledge. Time4Learning approaches writing both as an individual process and as a response to literature. While Time4Learning does not grade individual writing assignments, our program includes rubrics that allow parents and students to easily evaluate the completeness and correctness of their writing efforts.
