What Should Twelfth Graders Learn?
In their last year of high school, 12th graders are focusing on required courses, strengthening academic weak spots, and using electives to explore potential careers. During the course of twelfth grade, students should:
- Take an English course that includes literature, composition, grammar, and vocabulary instruction.
- Make sure they have completed at least Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, and if so, use their senior year to take a higher math such as Precalculus or Trigonometry.
- Finish up any science courses they have not taken in previous high school years (most colleges expect at least 3 high school science credits).
- Finish up any social studies courses they have not taken in previous high school years (most colleges expect at least 3 high school social studies credits).
- Focus on electives that interest them and will prepare them for future college and career study (most colleges expect at least 6 high school elective credits).
- If they are college-bound, make sure they have completed two years of foreign language, one year of physical education, and one semester of health education.
